What is cogeneration?

Cogeneration, also known as CHP (Combined Heat and Power), is an efficient system for the joint simultaneous production of forms of secondary energy (mainly electricity and heat), exploiting one single renewable primary source (biogas, vegetable oil etc.) or fossil source.
Generally the electrical energy and thermal energy we use on a daily basis are produced separately:

  • The electrical energy comes largely from big thermal power stations which disperse part of the energy into the environment (thermal energy with a low thermodynamic value, as it is at low temperature).
  • The thermal energy is produced via conventional boilers which convert the primary energy contained in the fuel, which has a high thermodynamic value, into thermal energy with a reduced thermodynamic value.

Compared to separate production of the same quantities of electrical and thermal energy, effective combined production allows optimal exploitation of the fuel used, resulting in improved efficiency and energy saving.
The basic objective of cogeneration is to optimise exploitation of the energy contained in the fuel: this results in lower fuel consumption and consequently lower environmental impact.
The added value of a cogeneration system is the possibility of producing electricity and at the same time recovering the heat which is usually not used and is dispersed in the atmosphere.

Agro-energy products like biogas (also digester gas and landfill gas) can be exploited with maximum efficiency by using cogeneration.
In this context Seko Agripower produces a complete range of cogeneration units, with powers from 50 to 2000 kWel; these meet the most demanding requirements for efficient electricity and heat production due to the wide range of models produced, able to efficiently exploit the agro-energy used and paying particular attention to the cogeneration of methane gas, biogas and biomethane.
